4 Hour Fire Rated Structural Steel Protection
Where extended fire resistance is required, the 4 Hour Fire Rated Structural Steel Encasement provides a tested solution for protecting structural steel columns and beams. The system is designed to maintain the fire resistance of loadbearing steel members using PROMATECT®-H board encasement, making it suitable for projects with higher fire performance requirements.
Supplied by PROSAFE, this PROMAT system consists of a single layer of PROMATECT®-H calcium silicate boards, with the board thickness determined according to the steel section factor (Hp/A ratio). The boards are installed using approved steel channel fixing or board edge fixing methods to create a complete encasement around the structural steel.
When installed in accordance with the tested construction, the system provides 240 minutes of fire resistance and achieves a Fire Resistance Level (FRL) of 240/-/-. The system has been tested and assessed in accordance with BS 476 Part 21:1987 for structural steel protection, providing a reliable passive fire protection solution for exposed steel members.
Suitable for commercial, industrial, institutional, residential and high rise developments, this system is commonly specified where extended structural fire protection is required as part of the building's passive fire protection strategy.
The 4 Hour Fire Rated Structural Steel Protection is suitable for a variety of building types, including:
-
Commercial buildings
-
Industrial facilities
-
Institutional buildings
-
Residential developments
-
High rise buildings
-
Refurbishment and restoration projects

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this system tested?
Yes. This system has been tested to BS 476 Part 21:1987 for loadbearing structural steel construction and provides 240 minutes of fire resistance when installed in accordance with the tested assembly. It is supported by the relevant test documentation and is accepted for BOMBA submission where applicable.
Do fire rated systems require certificate renewal?
No. Building owners do not need to renew the fire test certification. The certification is maintained by the system manufacturer (PROMAT), while the installed system should always follow the tested assembly and manufacturer recommendations.
How much does this system cost?
The cost depends on factors such as the project size, steel member dimensions and specification requirements. Contact PROSAFE for a project-specific quotation and technical advice here.
Why choose PROSAFE for passive fire protection systems?
PROSAFE supplies PROMAT fire rated systems that are rigid, lightweight, moisture resistant and supported by tested documentation. With a wide range of system options and practical technical support, we help make system selection easier for projects across Malaysia.
Can the same system be used for both steel columns & beams?
Yes. The published PROMATECT®-H system includes tested encasement details for both structural steel columns and structural steel beams when installed in accordance with the approved tested assembly.
How is the required board thickness determined?
The required board thickness is selected according to the structural steel Hp/A ratio and the required fire resistance period, following the published PROMAT design tables and tested assembly.
Are there size limitations for the structural steel sections?
Yes. The published installation methods are suitable for steel sections up to 686mm deep and 325mm wide. For larger steel sections or multiple sections within a single encasement, contact PROSAFE for technical guidance here.
